Jose Rivera's 2000 play References To Salvador Dali Make Me Hot is, completely aside from having one of the greatest titles ever, a compelling if elliptical bit of magical realism, telling the tale of a young woman, married to a soldier, who either escapes from reality into dreams or from dreams into reality. The difference isn't terribly relevant, as the play takes the form of a dream, with not everything meant to be taken as literally true, even (especially?) those things that most seem to be.

Structurally, the play opens and closes with fantastical sequences featuring an anthropomorphic (and amorous) moon and a talking cat, who is in love with a coyote (also anthropomorphic). These bookend a very long, and stylistically radically different series of scenes between heroine Gabriela and her soldier husband Benito, who is haunted by his tour in the first Gulf War. Their marriage seems untenable, and crumbles before our eyes, and is portrayed vividly, sympathetic to both parties, who take turns being sympathetic and less so in the audience's eyes.

This is all presented in a visually gorgeous fashion by director Patrice Miller, her design team, and what is certainly one of the best-looking casts you're going to see on a stage anywhere in New York. From top to bottom, there are some fascinating and expressive faces in this ensemble; a great part of what makes them all so fascinating to watch is that they all act really, really well. Mia Romero, who also produced, is tremendous in the lead, in a performance that's clearly a great labor of love. As her husband, Patrick Cann turns in a terrifically nuanced performance as a man without much apparent nuance, alternately a regular Joe, an insensitive boor, and someone trapped by his lack of options in life.

As powerful as it is, this middle section between Gabriela and Benito, as well played as it is by Romero and Cann, is very long. Unfortunately, it's not a play that lends itself terribly well to an intermission, as part of what makes it what it is is the spell it casts over the audience, and certainly by this point in this review it should be clear that there are a great many things to recommend this production. References To Salvador Dali Make Me Hot is playing at the Gene Frankel Theater until the 11th, an accidentally fortuitous date considering the subject matter, but whether you see it on that day or before, this is certainly a show to check out.

REFERENCES reflection

i can not begin to express my gratitude and growth during References. it was absolutely one of the most fulfilling, formative productions of my life and i will always carry the experience of playing Gabriela with me. i wish i had been better about updating throughout but c'est la vie -- and i've brought along some production stills to make up for it. enjoy!

also, in other news, most thrilling -- i will FINALLY be making the move to San Francisco in just six short weeks! new york will always be an idilic chapter (and it is far from over!) but i am chomping at the bit to see what california has in store for me after so many years. i hope you will all stay tuned to see how my jet-setting bi-coastal actor life turns out to be. i have a feeling, pretty great!

love&light always,
M

basis of decision

check out a few photos of mia on the 'basis of decision' set!

mia romero with tracy thomson.

mia romero as bobby jo, master debater.

a personal hello..

well, on-location michigan shooting for 'basis of decision' is wrapped! it was truly an amazing experience.. so much talent and vision on the shoot. i have made some lifelong friends and danced in the streets a la jerome robbins. dream come true! i am very much looking forward to working on the soundstage ballet, being shot here in new york this summer. the final product of this film will be something to see, without a doubt!

this week i started my LABrynth theater master class. in our first day, we worked our instruments with voice and movement (incredible to work with russell g. jones who i saw [and loved!] in Ruined at MTC.) then wrapped the day with 2 hours of writing. i ended up with a scene that was a riot and was blown away by the freedom that came with throwing two random characters together and having to 'make it work.' lovelovelove.

the work on coryphaeus' fall production continues to keep me busy. the team is coming together in an incredible fashion and *hopefully* our director will be locked down this week.. i am very much looking forward to making the full announcement!

make sure you swing by the reel page to see a new clip of 'awakening'.

again, not on the official record, but from a recent proposition, i may just be getting back on the choreography wagon again and am really looking forward to that opportunity. but mums the word for now. stay tuned for that announcement!

very inspiring week ahead.. seeing stephen adly guirgis' new play 'motherf**ker with the hat" tomorrow. scenework and rehearsals. re-visiting my good friend hamlet for my directing seminar. hearing tony kushner speak at the public on sunday.

what does a girl do with this much inspiration? lap it up..

and hopefully, knock out some more of her play. :P

light&love,
mia
